First I would like to apologize to all those wonderful posts I have not responded to over the last month or so. I have been on a real hectic work load and hardly have time to even get some sleep. Some great posts folks and not to mention the awesome relics!!!! With that in mind I have been going stir crazy trying to get out and find some relics like many of you have been lucky enough to recover. Just awesome to see all the great recoveries. So, with that note, please join me for yet another adventure…. Or in this case, a miss-adventure, for this session of the Old West Trail.
Finally, I had a break in my schedule to hopefully try to recover some of our nations history… Some people would like to say saving it, but in my case… I’m simply recovering it as for now, and as long as the items come into in my possession, are in no chance of being destructed…. Errrr perhaps that is not true as we will soon see. J
The day started out early and with a pretty decent wind, but my hopes were high alright. I had considered taking Missouri Digger and his dad to this site, but I did not think their chances were too good of finding a display of relics, so I chose to leave this dried up relic hole off of the sites to do trip list. I arrived on site to a horrific wind and much to my surprise, the ground was dry as a bone. Not the best I had hoped for as I had planned to dig lots of targets….. That is pretty hard to do in dry rocky ground with out any difficulty. No sooner did I get to swinging, I felt the urge of mother nature… and didn’t I know it, but I left my “relic” hunter supplies at home.
For that matter… I did not even bring a spare battery. I did manage a camera though.
After an hour of nothing but pieces of tin scrap and square nails, I manage a ratty signal and upon retrieval, I speared with my Predator digging tool! Oh boy, this trip is gonna be a great one. Oh well, an interesting picture or photo opportunity.
The button was burned and the tool made quick work of some negligent digging.
While rummaging in my fanny pack, what do I discover tucked away but a roll of necessities… and a spare battery! Wow, my lucky day. So, a quick picture and a short break and we’re back in business. I was hoping that it would not be another hour before I recovered a decent target.
Near by the button I managed a nice .44 cal dropped Colt bullet and from this site, they are rare.
I managed another button that was almost as nice as the stuck one, and chose not to photograph it and plopped it into my pouch. Not too much to look at so far, or even to keep my spirits up. Good thing the price of steel is on the rise as all the square nails I was digging, may help to defer that cost in my gas tank.
I was wondering after about 4 hours of wire, square nails and tin fragments, I‘d put up with the low discrimination, that all the extra time and digging was worth it? For the folks that don‘t know, this site has been very kind to me in the following department…..
Unit insignias are my favorite and I’ll work real hard to recover some more to add to the collection… so, time permitting and some garbage removal and the eventful recovery of another insignia, I will make the effort worth the endeavor.
Sadly, today was not going to be the day to revel to the relic GODS. I did manage a few more to add to the collection. A nice dropped mini ball surfaced and by this days standard…. A welcome addition.
Finally, a half decent button with no backmark appeared, but it was a button, and thank the lord I did not stick it.
A pleasant surprise surfaced as my last target for the day, one that I have not found many of at this site. A cannon friction primer.
On a lighter note, George Lesche had asked me while I was in Iraq what were the different uses we came up with for the digging tools that were sent to us…. Well George, I found one more today!!! J
Not only is it a useful digging tool…..
As one can see not every outing is loaded with belt buckles and a bag of mini balls… Relic hunting takes time and patience. And until next time thanks for viewing my search for the ….
