most of it is research... then knowledge of past sites ans some dumb luck thrown in the mix. I'f you on a military site, you should find buttons and bullets...lots of them... if that is not the case, then either someone has beat you to it, or your not in the right spot. If someone has beat you to it, then you need to hunt the outsides of the main areas, in what I call the barrens or hard to hunt places. These usually are the locations that still produce.
Except for DIV and Mardi Gras and Harrismith South Africa, I've been the one to locate all my sites. Problem is, I have very little sites left to hunt either due to no more access, or archy laws, or nominations to the historical register.
