Fresh water hunting in a clear lake last fall, nice pond dive.
I hunt mostly at night' well this night I'm out there' calm' full moon and scanning with the Tiger as usual in 6 ft. of water' inverted to the sand I feel a pull on my wetsuit' there's not supposed to be pulling like this' well I'm thinking it's no big deal' happens again' Crypy! hope that's not a body or some god awefull thing! I back out of the stirred sand and it clears a bit. I bring the dive light up slowly not knowing what to expect and I see a large round shadow in front of me. Now I'm jacked! I back away and turn my head and 5 inches in from of my mask is the biggest ugliest prehistoric snapping turtle head I have ever seen! Softball size! I didn't panic knowing this thing can strike like lightning the length of it's body! Backing up
2 then 3 feet I got a good look at it and it was trash barrel city size! How long was it there and what was on it's mind I thought and what if it took my ear or worse?
Well' next morning I tell the life guards about it and went hunting again.
I go there that night with Ewa ' not deep mind you''' Well I go running across the beach heading for a relief break in the bushes. It's dark out. I jump like a fairy to avoid stepping on the giant turtle on the beach and 10 foot down there's a figure' I turn the dive light on and in the sand a diver was sculpted out of sand and a giant snapping turtle the same! Awesome! Real life looking. Those life guards got me good. Almost didn't need the bushes after that.
