Don't know what you mean by "basic", but....

...out of all those available, I would say the CZ20/21 and the Minelab Excalibur are the two most often seen by folks that take water hunting seriously. The CZ20/21 is basically a Fisher CZ6 in a watertight housing and the Excalibur is a Soverign in a watertight tube. Both have their little quirks that some find annoying. I have a CZ20 with a 10in. coil. I've found it to be very efficient in saltwater and fresh. The 10in. coil is nice for covering a lot of area, but I wish I had an 8in. when it comes time for recovery in murky water. Neither the CZ or the Minelab have interchangeable coils or earphones. If you want options, you either send them back to the factory (or factory outlet) for changes, modifications, or repair. Either that or find a local guru electronics pro that will do it for you, however, that usually voids any warrantee. The PI type detectors are a whole different ball game. Since I've never owned one I can really give you a personal comment. However, from friends that have, you may be better off with the first two mentioned.
